Old Northeast is St. Petersburg’s classic historic neighborhood: brick streets, hexagon-block sidewalks, century-old oaks and a mix of 1910s–1930s bungalows, Mediterranean Revival villas and Colonial Revival homes β€” all within walking or biking distance of downtown and the waterfront. It is one of the most sought-after addresses in the city, and homes here rarely stay on the market long when they are priced well.

Lifestyle

Life in Old Northeast revolves around the water and the parks. North Shore Park runs along the bay with tennis courts, a public pool, a beach and a long waterfront path that continues into downtown; Coffee Pot Bayou is a favorite spot for spotting manatees and dolphins and for evening walks along Coffee Pot Boulevard. Downtown’s restaurants, the Pier and Beach Drive are a 10–15 minute bike ride away, so many residents rarely drive for errands or dinner.

Homes you will find

  • Historic bungalows and cottages on the inland streets β€” restored originals and updated homes with modern kitchens.
  • Larger Mediterranean and Colonial Revival homes, often closer to the water and on wider lots.
  • New construction where older homes have been replaced β€” usually elevated to current flood standards, especially near the bay.
  • Garage apartments and carriage houses behind some homes, which can add rental income or guest space.

Who it is best for

  • Buyers who love historic character and tree-lined, walkable streets.
  • Families who want parks, the bayfront and downtown close by.
  • Buyers looking for a single-family home rather than a condo, but still near the center of the city.

What to know before you buy

  • Elevation varies block by block. Streets near North Shore and Coffee Pot Bayou are in higher-risk flood zones and some flooded in 2024; inland blocks generally sit higher. Check the flood zone and elevation certificate for each home β€” see our flood zone and insurance guide.
  • Older homes need careful inspection. Roof age, electrical, plumbing and windows affect both repair budgets and insurability; plan for a 4-point and wind-mitigation inspection.
  • Historic guidelines may apply. Part of the area has historic designations; renovation and exterior changes can require additional review.
